Feeling Flat? How to Ignite Your Passion and Purpose

Have you ever had moments when you felt uninspired to do anything, even though you are not generally that kind of person? When it comes to getting up and doing the things you used to love doing, do you seem unable to find the will to do them? Do you feel that you have lost sight of what inspires you or that the thing that gives you purpose no longer does so for you?

Fortunately, you are not alone in this. This behaviour is often called ennui or, in other words, feeling flat. Feeling flat can last a few hours or even a few months, depending on how bad it is. While resting from the things that stress you out can certainly help, sometimes the only way out of feeling flat is to find ways to motivate yourself.

Not sure how to go about it? Here are a few tips on how to keep yourself inspired and motivated:

1. Meditate

Sometimes we feel flat because we are overwhelmed by the tasks we must do. It can cause unnecessary mental clutter that distracts us from taking inspired action. We can feel unmotivated when there are so many tasks. We can feel overwhelmed when there seems to be no end in sight. We avoid the workload and prefer to take longer breaks.

Meditation is one way to clear this clutter and re-centre ourselves on our goals. To start meditating, sit comfortably, whether with your legs crossed or perhaps with your feet flat on the ground. Take a few deep breaths and focus on your breathing. If your thoughts start to fly off to the other tasks you need to do, draw your attention back to your breath but never judge yourself for straying from your focus.

2. Keep a Gratitude Journal

It can be easy to forget what we have, especially when we are already successful. However, even successful people can feel flat and perhaps even more so than those who still feel like they have a lot to prove. For example, you may think you already have everything you need, but you do not have what fulfils you and gives you meaning.

Keeping a gratitude journal will keep you grounded and motivated to do what you need to do. A gratitude journal will show you what you have and what goals you need to work towards for the future. Additionally, being grateful for what is already in your life makes you feel happier and reminds you of what you can achieve.

In short, gratefulness reminds you of your ability to reach your goals. In turn, this reminder of your capabilities can significantly boost your morale.

3. Visualise Your Goals

Having a goal to work towards is one way to get out of bed and start moving. It may sound cliche, but as the saying goes, “the best inspiration is the deadline.”

But instead of keeping it all in your head, you can make your goals more concrete by creating a vision board. Be as creative as you want to be when putting it together. Include pictures that remind you of your goals. Photos of your mentors and idols or visual representations of whatever you want to manifest in your life. Visualising things in this way will help you in the long run by reminding yourself what it is you want out of life.

4. Find a Good Support System

Sometimes you can’t get out of your rut alone. That’s why you’ll want to find a support system to remind you of your purpose whenever you feel unmotivated. This group can be your friends, family, or even co-workers.

A good support system is encouraging and uplifting, not one that encourages toxic competition. These people will know how to tell you to keep it together when you need it most. They can provide you with a pep talk when you cannot seem to find it within yourself to get out of bed or start on your priority tasks.

Indeed, finding the right people to be onboard your journey is crucial since you will be giving them your trust. Hence, choose your support system wisely.

There are days when we want to do nothing at all, and that’s okay. There’s nothing wrong with taking a quick break to mentally, physically, and emotionally reset before taking on overwhelming tasks. However, we can’t stay in that listless state forever. If we linger on such emotions for too long, we may feel like we’ve forgotten our passions and why we do the things we do.

When you’re feeling flat, try the above tips to help you overcome demotivation. Also, re-examine your purpose and see if you still feel aligned with your goals. Above all else, just do whatever you can to always take one step forward each day.
